Conscious sedation is also referred to as oral sedation. Oral sedation is administered by pill. Shortly before the beginning of your appointment, a pill is given to you which begins to take effect in a short time. The effect of this sedation is that surrounding smells and sounds will cease to bother you. You will, however, have the complete ability to interact with your dentist as necessary. You will need to be prepared with a friend or family member to drive you home after the appointment.
As its name implies, the sedation is administered by an IV and will begin to take effect almost immediately. The dentist and his staff will be able to adjust the level of the IV sedation as necessary throughout the procedure. In a manner similar to oral sedation, you will be free of anxiety and fear throughout the treatment. After removing the IV, the sedation will gradually wear off.
The most commonly used sedation is nitrous oxide, often informally referred to as “laughing gas”. This is provided to the patient through a mask. The sedation is very mild, but the help it provides is quite effective. This treatment is also safely available for children. The sedation of the nitrous oxide wears away very quickly once the mask is removed.
The short answer is, yes! Thousands of dental patients have been able to get the treatment they need without fear or anxiety due to sedation dentistry. Many of these patients even use sedation dentistry to help them through regular checkups.
Your dentist will be able to help you choose the sedation method that will be the most effective for you and your treatment. We invite you to call our office today and set up a consultation to learn more about the benefits of sedation dentistry.
